GumGirl’s identity plays with the idea of girlhood and the grotesque; the experience of being a girl is beautiful and silly (I’m just a girl) but also carries its hardships and painful realities. Like gum, girlhood is limited—once you chewed gum, it loses flavor and changes its form—when reached a certain age, your body changes, your experiences change and the innocence and novelty fades. The book features a collection of quotes from famous feminist literature and films, presenting it in a pop brightly-colored satirical meme-style whilst touching upon deeper themes of womanhood, femininity, the female body, and fetishization of women.
